Place of Employment: Western State Hospital
Role with Internship: Administrative Support
Judy Nelsen came to Western State Hospital in 2005, beginning as a secretary in Psychology. She moved to the Nursing Dept. as a ward clerk on Admissions in 2007 for a brief period of time before moving back to Psychology at the end of the year. She has since been handling administrative duties for the Psychology Department. She manages credentialing for department clinicians, as well as students and interns, and assists the internship’s Training Director with paperwork and deadlines related to accreditation and APPIC’s Match process. Ms. Nelsen keeps students current on required trainings at Western State Hospital, helps with timekeeping, and other assorted tasks.
It’s a very good idea to stay on Ms. Nelsen’s “good side.” Fortunately, this isn’t difficult. Be on time, be conscientious about calling in during illness or emergencies and turn in your paperwork when she prompts you to do it, and Ms. Nelsen will try to help make sure you don’t forget something important- like the day you’re supposed to fly home to defend your dissertation.
When she’s not at work, Ms. Nelsen is an avid reader of fiction, loves to hike and grows roses for fun. She gardens extensively, despite the sometimes terrible southern summer heat. She also loves to travel as much as possible.
And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents like the Arabs,
And as silently steal away.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
