Choosing Where to Live

The Western Kentucky Psychology Internship Consortium consists of two primary sites at which interns practice. These two sites include Western State Hospital and Pennyroyal Center’s North Drive Clinic and are both located in Hopkinsville, KY.

Interns have multiple options with respect to towns/cities in which to locate, depending on lifestyle preference, tolerance for commute time, and financial considerations. In Kentucky, the smaller and more rural the area, the lower the cost of housing and living in general, though gas prices and commute time must be factored into the equation.

Most interns choose to live in the Hopkinsville area, or in close-by smaller communities such as Cadiz or Pembroke. If you chose to live outside of Hopkinsville, the drive to Western State Hospital and Pennyroyal Center is approximately 30 minutes from surrounding towns.

Interns who prefer larger cities often locate in Clarksville, TN. Clarksville has a variety of options for shopping and dining, and is located approximately 45 minutes from downtown Nashville, TN. The average commute time from Clarksville to Hopkinsville is about 35-40 minutes. Oak Grove, KY on the KY-TN border, is a few minutes from Clarksville, and closer to Hopkinsville by 10-15 minutes, depending on where housing is located.

Interns who prefer living in bustling metropolitan areas may choose Nashville, TN. The average drive to Hopkinsville is around 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic.

Past interns and current staff from WKPIC believe that the most reasonable places to live while serving as an intern at WKPIC are Hopkinsville or closely located smaller communities, or Madisonville. Oak Grove, KY is also reasonable, with its central access to both Clarksville, TN and Hopkinsville.
